Major Change in CBSE: Class 10 Exams to Be Held Twice a Year from 2026
New Delhi. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved a new examination pattern for Class 10 from 2026, under which supplementary exams will be discontinued. Students who score low in the first phase of exams will get a chance to improve their marks in the second phase.
According to the new policy, some subjects will have two exams per year. If a student scores poorly in the first attempt, they can reappear in the second phase to achieve better marks. The higher score from either phase will be considered the final result.
CBSE currently offers 16 academic subjects, 23 skill-based subjects, and 45 language subjects for students in Classes 9 and 10. Each student can take exams for seven subjects, including two languages, three elective subjects, and two additional subjects.
The board believes this new system will reduce the overall exam duration and provide students with more opportunities to improve their scores. However, students with special needs will continue to follow existing regulations, and no separate exams will be conducted for sports students.
CBSE has also directed all affiliated schools to complete their self-assessment on the SARAS portal by December 31, making it mandatory for all schools under the board’s jurisdiction.
